Invisible Monsters Remix by Chuck Palahniuk

Confession time-over my Easter break from uni, I have become a massive Panic! at the Disco fan. I always liked their music but I never really sat down and listened to it before. Anyway, I did and I quickly fell in love with it. You might be wondering what this has to do with Invisible Monsters. Well, there was one song I liked in particular called Time to Dance. On about my 10th time listening to it, I found out that it was based on a book called Invisible Monsters. Out of my sheer love for the song I decided to check it out and thank god I did.

See, this book is like the opening of this review. It jumps around like crazy, stories seem to get told at random but all of a sudden you reach a part where it all clicks into place and starts making a wonderful kind of sense. I honestly can't put my finger on what makes me love this book so much but since that doesn't make for a great review, I shall do my best to explain it.

First off, the plot. The blurb really doesn't do it justice. In a nutshell, this is a book about a model who suffers an accident and ends up losing half her face but that doesn't really give you any information about what the book is really about. Just trust me, whatever expectations you have about this book are likely wrong.

Secondly, the use of language. This book was told so honestly and with such vivid imagery that I couldn't help but be sucked in. This also links to how strong the main character is but mostly it's down to how graphic the book is. I don't mean in a crude way or even a violent way (though some things are described in sickening detail). It's more raw in a way that means that even when the images are not pleasant, there's still a weird kind of beauty in the way they are crafted.

As I read the Remix edition, the chapters are not ordered chronologically. This might seem gimmicky and I was sure it would bother me but in the end, it honestly didn't make much of a difference. I loved the fact there were 'hidden' chapters not covered in the main plot. It made me feel like even after I was finished, there were still secrets to be discovered.

Overall, I think this is the kind of book you are either going to hate or going to love. No matter which side you fall on, I definitely think it's a book worth trying. It's rare to find a book like this and I'm very glad I did.
